The objective of Alleyway is to destroy all the bricks in each level using a ball and some sort of racket, without losing the ball by dropping it to the bottom of the screen, like in Breakout. The speed of the racket can be adjusted using buttons A and B on the console when moving it, which is done horizontally at a fixed height. At the start of each new life, the player can reposition the racket before releasing the ball and starting to play again. The ball then always escapes at an angle of 45
