In Mario and Yoshi, the playing space is divided into four columns, on which monsters, represented by different enemies from the Super Mario series, fall from the top of the screen to the bottom in the manner of a Tetris. When they land, the monsters turn into blocks. Said blocks end up accumulating to fill more and more columns on the playing space, the goal being to prevent the monsters from reaching the line marked on the upper part of the screen. To eliminate a block, it must come into contact with another block corresponding to the same monster. For example, if a block representing a Goomba falls on another Goomba block, both disappear. The player takes control of Mario, who is located below the playing space. He has the power to swap two adjacent columns at any time. Thus, the player must frequently swap the columns to ensure that none of them exceeds the upper part of the playing space. Points are given to the player when he eliminates blocks.
